Practice

As a Patent Attorney, Jonathan Schlaifer has over a decade of experience with patents, specializing in patent preparation and prosecution. Jonathan has prepared and prosecuted a large number of computer-related applications, including a wide variety of hardware and software technologies, as well as various technologies in the electrical, Internet, electro-mechanical, medical device, semiconductor manufacturing, optics, and business methods fields. Jonathan specializes in areas such as artificial intelligence, databases and data mining, and web technologies. Jonathan also has a comprehensive understanding of important issues in patent law, especially subject matter eligibility under 35 U.S.C. §101 and means-plus-function claiming under 35 U.S.C. §112(f).

Jonathan worked as a software engineer at the National Library of Medicine and as a Patent Examiner (examining Document Processing applications) before attending law school. During law school, Jonathan was an intern at the Solicitor's Office of the USPTO, assisting in appellate litigation. Jonathan has also practiced law as a patent prosecutor at several large law firms in the Washington, DC area. Jonathan has represented a variety of large clients, such as large software and electronics companies, as well as smaller clients in a variety of technologies, preparing and prosecuting applications, advising clients, assisting with legal research, due diligence, and litigation support work. During his time at large firms, Jonathan helped prepare an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court. Jonathan also worked on a variety of pro bono cases, such as in landlord-tenant law and family law cases.

Prior to joining Bayes PLLC, Jonathan practiced at general practice and boutique firms, including Nixon Peabody LLP, Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox, PLLC, Fish & Richardson, P.C. and NSIP Law.
